What is a Bridge or Fixed Partial Denture?

A bridge or fixed partial denture usually consists of at least 2 prepped teeth on either end of an area where a tooth has been lost by a patient. This is a fixed restoration, which is not removable or taken in and out of the mouth routinely. A bridge may or may not have a metal framework as a base structure off of which porcelain is stacked and baked on top.

Why would I need a Bridge or Fixed Partial Denture as a patient?

Sometimes a tooth is lost due to several possible factors, failed root canal treatment, gross decay, and or severe periodontal disease; in this case to bridge the gap, or fill in the edentulous area where the tooth is missing a bridge may be a viable option.
