What is a removable partial denture?
A removable partial denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces several lost teeth that is taken in and out of the mouth daily for cleaning and maintenance. Two main types of removal be partial dentures exist one with a metal framework with hard pink denture acrylic added on top that usually has metal clamps, and a Valplast or flexible partial denture that is made of flexible semi-translucent pink acrylic material. For better esthetic results a Valplast may be the RPD of choice due to its all pink and clear acrylic clasps that are difficult to see on anterior/front teeth. The traditional metal framework RPD me be the restoration of choice if longevity, and or if the flexibility of the removable denture may cause irritation.
Why would I need a removable partial denture?
Sometimes a patient is lacking teeth (edentulous) and wants to replace several teeth and may or may not have the option to due bridgework. A partial denture may be the most reasonable and cost effective treatment option in certain circumstances.
